Free Range Pigs

Our Rojo Pez Free Range Pigs are raised in small groups on pasture and woodland. Their shelters are
soft and dry, with warm straw bedding. They are free to roam at will, to play, root and forage as nature intended
and experience none of the overcrowding related stressors that plague their factory raised cousins.

They dine on non-medicated antibiotic and hormone free food as well as a regular selection of greens, fruits,
vegetables and grains, and whatever grass, leaves, rootlets, worms and berries they may find in their travels.

Another difference is that our pigs are allowed to grow slowly. This results in a higher quality meat,
darker and more flavourful. It stands alone in quality and taste.

What Makes Rojo Pez Pork Different?

We raise our pigs differently, with 2 goals in mind:

Raise happy pigs – provide a natural environment with minimal stress. Let pigs be pigs.
Produce healthier pork – slow down the rate of growth and feed a more robust diet in order to produce
richer and more nutritious meat.

Our farm differs from factory farms because we:

  • provide soft bedding. At night our pigs sleep in deep straw on either rubber mats or soft dry earth. During the
day they like to sleep in shallow holes they dug, or in the wallow itself.
  • allow our pigs free access in and out of their indoor shelter. They like to go to bed at sunset and are up early if it is
warm and sunny. On rainy days they often sleep in. When they do go outside, it is into regions of pasture or woodland.
  • maintain low stocking density. Although they tend to hang out as a drove or break into groups of two or three,
they have the chance to wander off on their own.
  • provide them with a natural environment that allows for normal pig behaviours – rooting, foraging, playing,
and wallowing. Games of ‘chase’ and ‘tug of war’, or both at once, are particularly popular.
  • eliminate their fear by providing positive people experiences. Most are quick to learn how good belly
rubs feel and will voluntarily roll on their sides when receiving them.
  • Feed a robust and varied diet. Aside from their regular non-medicated vegetarian feed, they are offered
a variety of fruits, vegetables and grains in addition to whatever they find while rooting through the soil.
  • Comfortable transport to slaughter.

Federal rules dictate that in order to sell our pork, they must be slaughtered in a government approved facility.
Until such time that these facilities become mobile and are able to visit our farm (thus eliminating the need for
any transport), we make their trip as least stressful as possible by:

  • only transporting up to 8 pigs at a time, so that they all have adequate room.
  • provide soft straw bedding over a solid rubber mat flooring.
  • provide food for the journey
  • reduce transport time by using local slaughter facilities
  • allow the pigs several days to acclimatize to the trailer by giving them a chance to eat and sleep in it first,
and to learn to enter it on their own free will.

Because our pigs are raised in this way, we see minimal fighting and do not need to take additional measures to
prevent the spread of disease. Our pigs lead happy lives.

  What We Offer
  HOW TO ORDER
We sell our pigs by the half and charge $5/lb dress weight (this means the weight of the pig after the internal organs have been removed, but before it has been cut into the various chops, hams, roasts, bacon etc. The final butchered cost/pound varies but is closer to $7/lb. Depending on how big it is, a half pig can cost between
$375 and $475.

Orders are made in advance. New purchasers or anyone who wishes to have custom butchering performed must pay a deposit. Arrangements will be made to deliver the pork on the same day it is ready from the butcher.

Because of the above format, our pork is only available to residents of the Sea to Sky Corridor or Lower Mainland of BC.
